Western dwarf mistletoe (ArceUlhobium campylopodum Engelm.) has been recognized for years as a damaging disease organism of Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi Grev. & Bale) in southern California. On Laguna Mountain, Cleveland National Forest, for example, heavy mortality associated with dwarf mistletoe and insects threatens high value recreational areas. In the southwestern United States, research has shown that pruning the brooms off dwarf mistletoe infected ponder-osa pines (P. ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) increases vigor and reduces mortality considerably (Lightle and Hawksworth 1973). We studied the …

Resistance of Ponderosa Pine to Western Dwarf Mistletoe in Central Oregon

Ponderosa pines with little or no dwarf mistletoe in infested stands on the Deschutes, Ochoco, and Rogue River National Forests in Oregon were tested for resistance to dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium campylopodum). Small trees produced by grafting scions from the resistant and susceptible candidates onto seedling rootstock were planted in 1967-69 beneath a heavily infested stand of ponderosa pine...

Dwarf mistletoe-host interactions in mixed-conifer forests in the sierra nevada.

ABSTRACT We determined the spatial pattern of dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium spp.) associated with two different conifer hosts, white fir (Abies concolor) and Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi), in forests around the Lake Tahoe Basin and at the Teakettle Experimental Forest, both located in the Sierra Nevada. We also examined a number of host variables and bark beetle incidence to determine how these...

ECOLOGY AND POPULATION BIOLOGY Linking Parasitic Plant-Induced Host Morphology to Tritrophic Interactions

We investigated the tritrophic interactions among southwestern dwarf mistletoe [Arceuthobium vaginatum (Willd.) Presl subsp. cryptopodum], mistletoe herbivores, and host pine (Pinus ponderosaDougl. ex Laws. and C. Laws. variety scopulorum Engelm.)-associated predators. In an observational study, we characterized differences in pine-associated arthropods and pine branch morphology between branch...

Pest Damage and Integrated Control

A broader, more comprehensive concept of forest pest management is needed to make it a really integral part of forest resource management. A generalized model structure of a forest pest management system is presented, and the major components are discussed briefly. Predictive models are the primary mechanism of information flow to decision and action in the system. General considerations affect...
